A flurry of meetings over the last week or so has stopped us writing up our recent China trip to see our Mandagram project on display in Shanghai.
In case you missed it, this is a research project we’ve been doing for the British Council in China looking at the pictorial history of Mandarin and merging it with pictograms, hence Mandagrams.
The work was displayed on a white cube on the corner of a busy junction in Shanghai (yes, in the street - weird).
But actually a good thought: lots of interested passers-by stopping and taking pictures. Here are some of the boards and how they looked in situ. On one face: some travel graphics.

Here’s the ‘cafe’ wall.

Unfortunately torrential rain made a bit of a mess of our neatly arranged Chinese map of the UK. Ah well.
Luckily there was a bit of time before, after and between lectures and interviews to sample the delights of modern China.
Multiple choice dim-sum in Hong Kong.

These were the best.

Various modes of transport in Hangzhou: bikes and Ferraris (not our Ferrari, we hasten to add).

Very odd, very strong liquor in tiny glasses.

Amazing architecture in Shanghai.

And a great stroll around the shops.

Good to see that the wedding industry is alive and well. These, apparently, are taken as ‘pre-wedding’ photos.

And a really beautiful lake in the middle of Hangzhou.

Our thanks to the team at the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy for having us over, especially Tim, Jazreel and Jamie for the rescue mission.
