This is the first of a series of projects that we've begun for IWM (Imperial War Museums).
The Childhood In War exhibition opened 31 July at their Lambeth site in London: a free, interactive exhibition that explores how children have experienced and adapted to war and conflict from 1914 to the present day, and features recreations of an evacuee train carriage, a Cold War-era kitchen, among many other rooms and displays.
Our task was creating the posters and lead the communications to bring visitors to the exhibition.
We drew on 'green plastic soldiers' for our inspiration, then created a new cast of characters that are both familiar, and a bit jarring, all at the same time. By playing with the vernacular of childhood (the toy solider) and recreating children themselves in the same style, we're intentionally making passers-by look, and think about some of the issues that the exhibition raises.
The exhibition is free and open until 28 February 2027.
