Navigating Camberwell

Just over a week ago we were at an evening to celebrate Camberwell College of Art’s centenary, see their building works unveiled and to hear Grayson Perry formally open the new building.

This was also an opportunity to observe first-hand the signage scheme that we have developed for the site. This takes the architectural cues of the four different buildings on site and incorporates them into the details of the design.

The key to the scheme is a ‘master’ diagram which introduces the scheme in the main reception. This is then repeated at key decision points...

...and broken down into single directories within each block.

We also used floor vinyls and maps to help visitors navigate a notoriously tricky site, which also operates on multiple levels. Other devices such as corridor drivers and clearly delineated block signage help as well.

For the evening itself, the re-opened building that faces the main road was illuminated (see below). Now that Camberwell’s site is re-unified (and navigable), it seems well set for another century of great ideas.
